The Internet and Social Change in China

Professor Alan Hunter gave this lecture last week talking about the impact of the web on chinese politics and society.

With well over 300 million citizens online China is now the single biggest networked nation on the planet. This has caused a massive shift in social behaviour and has led to a number of new modes of discursive production in Chinese society. Alan discusses a number of web-based case studies that show how the popular misconception of China - as a country where people are unable to speak out against authority- can be seen as being actively subverted through internet based mass-intervention.

Through analysing social network behaviour within the PRC it can be seen that citizens are heavily monitoring the behaviour of officials - unveiling truth in politics and societal wrongdoings - in order to enact a kind of 'deliberative democracy'. Often through humour and subversion, rather than traditional political rhetoric.

This is a great insight into an alternative view of China and the way the world wide web is working there.

Future of Technology in Education FOTE 09

Just a few reflections from Future of Technology in Education FOTE 09 on Friday:

I was particularly interested in Dougald Hine's talk about unbundling the University. Dougald talked about stripping the university right back to its component parts, arguing that the university itself has become somewhat ordained in a mission where it has lost its connection to learners. He illustrated this with an example of a bunch of folk who, dissatisfied with the offerings of Media Arts MA courses, went and set up their own network of practitioners.

He talked about a number of grassroots initiatives that are springing up as a rejection to this including some of the findings he helped on in the edgeless university by JISC. This included Pippa Buchanon doing a DIY masters by creating a a network of people and content to help her learn, the smart work company who are rethinking managing practices for the 21st century, alterfutures who are a network of alternative design futurists as well as the School of Everything which is described as an ebay for learning to name just a few.

Add to this a number of other current experiments such as the P2P University, University of the People, Openlearn Learning Clubs, Lisa Chamberlain's Open PhD and the plethora of grassroots education initiatives that are surfacing around the uk and beyond at the moment and the statement that "This seminar feels a bit like sitting with

a group of record industry executives in 1999" couldn't have felt more appropriate.

I was also very interested to hear about David Jennings ideas around Progressive Austerity and how if we thought about optimising the use of slack spaces for example, we could make the world of education more open (most university equipment for example is unused for 90% of the time). Seems simple as an idea, but in an educational world motivated by profit rather than serving the educational needs of the people it becomes rather, unneccessarily, complex.

The future of education could indeed be at a radical price. And it could be an even more radical price for our Universities.

This talk gets really interesting at around 17 minutes where David Parry starts talking about how Universities are going wrong by choosing to protect a business model with digital facelifts, as opposed to preserving their social function (much as newspapers/music did in the way they handled the internet). After this he also goes on to discuss the transition from a 'book-based' model of knowledge towards a non-linear model.

Liz Azyan, a social media researcher, has just put together this fairly comprehensive list of UK University YouTube channels.

It is nice to see so many UK universities on there, it's even nicer to see that our Coventry University's channel ranks so highly (second to the Open University in terms of channel views and by far the biggest in terms of number of videos).

I suspect that most of the content will be marketing led, as opposed to teaching led, (something I'm trying to move away from on our channel) but at least it is a start.

No Surprises

It's that time of year again. The time when the education system steps into focus in the national press and phrases like 'dumbing down' become part of national vocabulary for a day or two. Every year it is the same old story. 'It must be getting easier' we here the news cry.

But lets step back a moment. Lets consider the other side of the coin. Perhaps teachers are getting better at teaching, perhaps students of today are working harder because they realise the value of their education. Perhaps we should be congratulating the students and the education system. But we wont do that will we.

Yes we do need to question areas of state apparatuses like the school system and ways we test intellectual ability. But lets do it in an intelligent way instead of regurgitating the same old discourses that we see year on year. Apologies for the generalisation but if anyone is dumbing down it's the journalists.

Free Higher Education? My Predicitions

I've almost come to the end of reading Chris Anderson's FREE and its given me a number of thoughts with regard to how free might be capitalised in HE. Here's some predicitions.

Institutions, as a way of engaging and getting people excited about education, will start to become more open with their content (as indeed many now are doing with open access to academic journals, lectures, seminars, books, blogs etc). This will also be helped by governmental drives to embed education into the culture and identity of people and to encourage academia to open up publicly funded research, teaching etc.
Within 10-15 years we will see the emergence of a two tier education system where students go the traditional route by enrolling at an institution, and more techno-savvy people realise that they can effectively learn for free with nothing but an internet connection, informal support groups and a portable media player. It is already possible to do this through a combination of downloading lectures from YouTube, iTunes U, Openlearn, MIT etc.
Private companies and innovative HE institutions will realise that they can exploit these informal learning opportunities by offering interested students the opportunity to formalise their learning through exams and other forms of assessment. So effectively the learning and knowledge accumulation will be Free, but assessment and feedback will be paid for. So students will effectively use the best material they can find to build their own degrees via content from existing universities and perhaps choose to formalise it into qualifications.
Education will move from intensive thing that people do at the start of their adult life, to something that happens over time.
We will therefore see the emergence of flexible, lifelong and evolving degree programmes that can be manipulated in relation to the changing discourses of the discipline/industry that it is relevent to.
To support this individuals who are more experienced are likely to start creating organisational structures to direct people to the good and worthwhile content. Academic bookmarking sites will emerge (similar to Digg, Delicious etc)
University's will co-exist along side these new structures, exploiting opportunities where they can get these non-paying customers to pay (ie by offering training in specific areas, more complex areas that need to be taught)
How is this paid for? Those fee paying students subsidise the learning objects that can be used by anyone. And/or repositories of quality knowledge will have varying levels of free to support the cultural demand for knowledge/education.
Eventually, formal degrees will be just the start of a lifelong learning continuum, where, once a student knows how to learn and exploit the web they are ready to go it alone for the duration of their career/life and they will have the confidence to find the groups that support them best.
Informal learners will build communities that support and teach each other through peer-based learning, as already happens on the web in many areas.
Academics, initiated through governmental drives, will be encouraged to contribute to the 'public learning commons', there will be a growth in lecturers who blog, podcast, turn their work into accessible learning opportunities for everyone. This will form part of a University's core principles and the assessment of the quality of that institution.
Universities will lose their power as academic journals, teaching and research opens up to anyone, regardless whether they are based within an academic institution. Industry will build their own programmes of study and not necessarily have any affiliation with the academy.
As a result of all of the above, the law will be required to reassess what intellectual property and copyright actually are in a digital age.
More people will contribute to new knowledge and research. Universities will still be needed, but wont necessarily be as crucial as they are now
The networked academic will be incorporated into academic job descriptions, to support the networked student

These are just a few initial thoughts, we're already seeing a lot of this happening today. I believe that we are witnessing the emergence of a genuine alternative to the University. HE beware!

Open Education in the UK - a potential for disruption

Although the Open Education movement is relatively young in the UK, the governments plans at creating the learning revolution and the recent publication of the edgeless university (along with an innovation fund to support projects) are starting to give the movement some clout.

Alongside this, advances in open access policies for funded research are also being instigated by a number of the research councils.

All in all then, I think we're at the start of something very big and disruptive for uk HE. not only are universities being provoked into investing in radically new business models (2 year degrees, more distance learning courses, longer part time opportunities) but we're also starting to see a number of institutions investing in opening up their lecture halls (OU, CAmbridge, Oxford, Warwick, UCL and Coventry have all made the commitment to deliver open content through iTUnes U for example.

A number have already started to introduce open into their structures and policies, Lincoln's Academic Commons for example.

There's a very real movement happening here, a movement that I believe has the potential to disrupt the traditional models of Higher Education. Perhaps one where we share a bit more of the good stuff between institutions, where we utilise existing good resources rather than building our own, where selfless efficiency takes place over organisational pride and closed opportunities.

Trouble is, the way that UK HE operates is not set up financially for models of sharing. Competition between institutions is rife and it is rarely in a University's best interest to effectively give away their stuff for free to other institutions. when they do it is often either a precurser to the acceptance of funding bid or merely because the institution sees other value in it (marketing for example).

Despite being largely publicly funded there is relatively little culture that actively perpetuates the promotion of the gift economy and the sharing of best practices. People keep things close to their chests, all protected by rather cumbersome and futile notions of intellectual property.

A new lecturer must effectively start from scratch when prepping their classes for example, and although this is partly necessary due to the range and variety of content within courses, it seems rather innefficient for a sector that has the bulk of its income handed out by the taxpayer.

The JISC report raises a number of interesting questions here, and I am glad to see that they have noted this as one of the issues with improving the effectiveness and efficiency of HE.

Perhaps we will see new financial models emerging, but in a time where every penny is up for review its going to take a real rethink about what 'value' really means when it comes to being part of the HE community.

Genuine Open Education will happen and it will disrupt HE more fundamentally than we currently think, it is just a case of when. Universities are no longer the gatekeepers of knowledge, but for now they are gatekeepers to higher qualifications (this will change over coming years). Perhaps the current financial climate is the perfect opportunity for HE to reflect on what we're actually here for, but we'll need to think outside the box if anything genuine is going to happen from the public sector.

This week we had a massive five day conference at the University discussing a number of issues within the Sporting Industries. Called Play the Game, the conference explored many themes including match fixing in sport, the Beijing games, doping, money and much more.

As well as using the conference to enable journalism students live experiences through being the conference reporters (via the CU Today site), we've also made most of the Play the Game talks available through iTunes U and on the Coventry University Podcast Site

By the time we've finished there will be over 40 teaching and learning resources, over 100 press releases/articles done by students as well as a number of video interviews with the attendees. Well done to all the students for their hard work, here are just some of the talks from the conference:

With the impending launch of Chris Anderson's book 'Free: The Future of a Radical Price' in a few weeks it has started to get me thinking about open education models and how universities might need to more proactively engage in the gift economy.

It seems bizarre that while the cost of knowledge is going down across most 'knowledge/IP' sectors, the price of formal higher education is going up.

I'm currently working on the Coventry University Podcasts so that they have more social functions, the metadata is more relevant and to make them more searchable. The plan is to make it easier for our content developers on our website to use them and spread them around the site.

It's a fairly big project that involves me taking the content and jazzing it up so that it is fit for 21st century learners (and also so that it integrates better with our iTunes U developments at Coventry). This basically involves rebuilding a back end, reconfiguring the data and cleaning up the files where I can. The aim of this is so it will support future developments in this area. The team here has been meaning to do it for a while so that we can really start to encourage more academics to use podcasting/vodcasting as a way to engage their students and other communities.

To save us significant amounts of development time we've decided to get an account with the people at Podbean. Like YouTube a lot of the development work has been done to make it very usable regardless of the platform where people want to listen. It also has video support so that we can be flexible with the type of content we post. Like youtube it also has a community there as well, so hopefully it will make us more findable and our podcasts stealability will hopefully go up because of this.

It's been quite good fun listening to a lot of the podcasts, especially the Coventry Conversations series that involves media movers and shakers coming to the University to speak to students and the people of Coventry. I think that lecturer John Mair has done a great job to get so many high profile speakers in to our university (Jon Snow, Mark Thompson, Baroness Amos, Armando Ianucci, list goes on.

They call it 'Friction Free Capitalism'. It has never been easier for consumers to talk to each other about the benefits and pitfuls of products, services, culture etc.

Clearly then, and this is me with my marketing hat on, if a student creates something off of their own back, that in a way helps other 'consumers' of education to make their decisions, then surely there may be a time when the way we advertise and sell education is going to change rapidly.

Forgot the jargon and marketese talk that dominates the corporate affairs publications in education, what it is about now is real people telling real people about the truth. As this video demonstrates, perhaps.

Why every UK University needs a YouTube channel

We've been quite slow here in the UK at embracing the Social web in Education. Yes, there are examples of good practice, but sometimes these are very few and far between. Lets take YouTube as an example...

It was about a year ago that I started posting up the odd video or two onto the Coventry University YouTube channel. Since then we now have about 130+ videos and when you include the content that the students have uploaded, this accumulates to over a million views. There are a few other institutions who have been experimenting with youtube. Most Notably the OU, but also Birmingham City, Leeds Met, Bristol and Oxford Said to name a few. But compared to our US counterparts, we are relatively slow.

I've been seeing the YouTube experiment as a bit of a test really, just to see what works and what doesnt as well as getting an idea of how we could use this in other areas of the 'business'. Despite virtually no internal or external promotion it is clearly being watched and passed around by our existing and potential students.

It also shows how our marketing efforts can contribute to the gift economy, with a large number of people, organisations and companies taking the content and embedding it around their sites (again promoting us and our brand). Also, most importantly, it gives our existing and potential students something to watch. It also makes it very easy for academics and administrators to effectively steal the work and use it in their own contexts. I like to call this Accidental Advertising if you like. Indeed, many of the lectures that we've uploaded have seen academics have audiences of many thousands of viewers. Here's some links to see how this is happening...

Today, the marketing department at Coventry started promoting the channel as well as tagging the course related content to our course pages. We have a banner on the homepage as well as embeds of relevant videos on the course pages. It will continue to be integrated more into the website, so we've only just begun exploring the potential. I also use it to update our Coventry University facebook page, which has grown to a few thousand fans in the last few months.

Lastly, this has cost us nothing, apart from a little bit of time from some people who are already getting paid to do other things. We are also fortunate to have a large group of volunteering students who have helped to shape and create content for the channel. Return on investment has therefore been incredibly significant.

I think that it will continue to develop, to be a very positive resource for marketing, alumni, international, research and teaching and learning within our University. It allows ex-students to keep an eye on us, it allows existing students to participate in its creation and it allows potential students to get a realistic view of our University (with comments and a space to voice opinions).

In terms of the lectures we upload, it also allows anyone to benefit from them, share and pass on the work, commenting and re-contextualising the work.

Had we developed our own channel, without the help of YouTube, this would have cost many thousands and many hours, time which we can now spend on the content and resources. Now it is giving us new ways of exposure, as well as hopefully helping Open Educators around the world, in its own small way.

I hope that our work will help encourage others to start thinking about how they can be a bit cleverer with the open education resources they have got. Most importantly it is about getting them out there, so others can see for themselves.
